Is Your Facility Ready for the Cold Weather

We spend so much time battling the hot Southeastern summers that the cold temperatures can sneak up on us before we have had time to properly plan for winter. With nearly 40% of commercial utility expenses attributed to heating and cooling, preparing your facility for winter is critical not only to your comfort but also your bottom line. There are several things that can be done, by facility managers and by HVAC technicians, to enhance energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and system reliability.

Clean and/or replace air filters: Clogged or dirty filters can reduce the efficiency of your systems. Simply changing or cleaning filters on a monthly schedule can dramatically improve system function and indoor air quality.

Program and calibrate thermostats: Setting programmable thermostats according to periods of peak occupancy and vacancy is one of the easiest energy conservation methods available. Calibration is also important. When your thermostat delivers an incorrect reading, it affects the overall efficiency of your HVAC system. Let us test the accuracy of your readings to ensure reliable operation.

Adjust the registers and fans: In a two-story building, some supply registers on the second floor should be closed to trap the hot air (which rises). Additionally, you should reverse the direction of the air flow of ceiling fans, in order to push down warmer air.

Duct inspection: Air ducts should be examined for damage in order to repair any areas that may let heat escape. They should also be cleaned regularly.

Seal building leaks: Weather stripping and building seals can crack or deteriorate over time. Repairing defects will help your system maintain a constant temperature.

Schedule a ConServ system inspection: Inspection before extreme weather change is always a good idea to identify areas of concern before system failure can occur. Our technicians will perform a thorough evaluation, including filters, belts, switches, motors, gas pressure, and refrigerant levels.

Consider PM agreements: Our preventative maintenance agreements are an easy way to keep your systems running at peak efficiency. ConServ techs will perform regular maintenance at agreed upon intervals, reducing costs, giving you peace of mind, and freeing up more of your time for critical projects.
